“A boat full of songs from two guys named John.”

— Ad for They Might Be Giants’ ‘Flood’ in the March 1990 issue of Spin. The album was released Jan. 5, 1990 — exactly 22 years ago today.

This album = my freshman year of high school. I remember walking around Marquette Park late at night with this dude in a local band (the first of many, many musicians that I would end up crushing on) singing “Whistling in the Dark.” He gave me his army-green trench coat, which he’d hand-stenciled with the Nine Inch Nails logo. Twenty-two years later, I still have that trench coat somewhere.
