“The Interrupters” finally made it to a theater in my city (thank you, Tallahassee Film Society!) this weekend. I went to see it last night and can’t stop thinking about the people in the film and the compelling way in which their heart-wrenching stories were told. These folks came up in the same Chicago neighborhoods that I did (I spotted so many familiar places in the film), and it’s mostly through luck and circumstance that the violence engulfing them didn’t come quite as close to my own life.
There isn’t a journalist on the planet I admire more than Alex Kotlowitz. “The Interrupters” is based on a New York Times Magazine piece he wrote, and he co-produced the film with Steve James, the filmmaker behind “Hoop Dreams.”
I wish this film’s local run had lasted longer than a weekend, because I would be heading right back to the All Saints Cinema to see it again.
